Vittorio Vandelli è un insegnante di lingua e letteratura inglese. Ha frequentato l’università a Bologna durante gli “anni di piombo” che seguirono le ribellioni degli anni 60, laureandosi in letteratura americana con una tesi su R. Chandler e il romanzo hard-boiled, un genere che ha sempre amato perché denuncia i mali sociali in una forma narrativa dal ritmo incalzante. Ha pubblicato infatti i romanzi noir Runaway – fuga a Venezia (2003), Dark City (2013) e Scrivere o uccidere (2021) – vai alla sezione romanzi noir.
Ha inoltre dato alle stampe la cosiddetta Saga del professore Bingo, opere che hanno come protagonista l’irriverente professore: i romanzi Il professor Bingo (2000) e Il professor Bingo e il nuovo che avanza (2001), la raccolta di racconti Questa scuola non è una azienda! (2006), l’antologia Il Dodecalogo (2008), la raccolta di articoli Le pillole del prof. Bingo 2000/2010 – dieci anni vissuti pericolosamente all’interno della scuola italiana (2010) e la pièce teatrale La fabbrica dei cretini (2018).
Nel 2015 è stato il primo autore italiano finalista al premio The Write Stuff della London Book Fair con il volume Silvio Berlusconi’s Italy – a Portrait of the Country and its Godfather.
Inoltre Vandelli ama la musica folk e rock, il cinema e il viaggiare. Si definisce un amateur folk-singer e tiene da decenni corsi e conferenze-spettacolo di musica, cinema e letteratura – vedi la sezione attività culturali. Da Gennaio 2023 conduce la trasmissione televisiva Come On – Let’s Go per TRC TV.

Vittorio Vandelli is a teacher of English Language and Literature and an author, a translator, an essayist and a musician.
He was born and raised in the country in which he still lives, Italy, the cradle of the best and the worst. He went to grammar school in the early seventies, a time of high ideals of change that taught him to see behind closed doors and to love folk and rock protest music, becoming a musician himself. He attended university in Bologna during the ‘lead years’ of terrorism that followed the rebellious sixties. He graduated in American Literature with a thesis on R. Chandler and the ‘hard-boiled novel’, a genre he has always loved because it denounces the evil of society in a fast-paced narrative form. He has published three noir novels so far: Runaway-fuga a Venezia (Runaway to Venice, 2003), Dark City (2013), a dystopian SF noir dealing with the post-9/11 crash of civilizations, Scrivere o Uccidere (Writing or Killing, 2021), a homage to hard-boiled fiction and film noir.
In the 2000s he started writing about the world he knew from within, education in Italy, an issue that clearly revealed the advancement of a unique neo-con social model. He wrote articles and essays on education and then a series of satirical novels and short-stories on the Italian school system: Il professor Bingo (2000), Il professor Bingo e il nuovo che avanza (Professor Bingo and the new advancing world, 2001), Questa scuola non è una azienda! – I racconti del professor Bingo (This School is not an Enterprise! – Professor Bingo’s Short-Stories, 2006), Il professor Bingo e le Idi di Marzo (Professor Bingo and the Ides of March, 2008), Le Pillole del prof. Bingo 2000-2010 (Professor Bingo’s Pills 2000-2010), La fabbrica dei cretini (The Factory of Stupidity, 2018). In these works he revealed the other typical feature of his fiction: satire. These books form the so-called Saga del professor Bingo (Professor Bingo’s Sage).
In 2015 he was the first Italian author shortlisted for the final at the London Book Fair’s The Write Stuff contest with the non-fiction book Silvio Berlusconi’s Italy – a Portrait of the Country and its Godfather, a tale of the immoral Berlusconi’s ‘ventennio’ (20 years) in power.
Vandelli loves folk and rock music, cinema and travelling. He has held courses and ‘performing’ lectures on music, cinema and literature for decades – see the section attività culturali. Since January 2023 he has hosted the TV show Come On – Let’s Go on TRC TV.

He was born and raised in the country in which he still lives, Italy, the cradle of the best and the worst.
He went to grammar school in the early seventies, a time of high ideals of change that taught him to see behind closed doors and to love folk and rock protest music, becoming a musician himself.
He attended university in Bologna during the ‘lead years’ of terrorism that followed the rebellious sixties. He graduated in American Literature with a thesis on R. Chandler and the ‘hard-boiled novel’, a genre he has always loved because it denounces the evil of society in a fast-paced narrative form.
In this epoch, he also studied literature at Centro Studi Americani in Rome and English in London, where he had the chance to learn about the British welfare state of the Labour years. He also travelled extensively in the USA, curious to see the state of the nation ‘on the road’, inspired by the American rebel authors of the 50s and 60s.
In the eighties he started teaching English in public schools and made seminars, lectures and courses on British and American literature, music and cinema.
In 1989 he happened to be one of the ten finalists in a national literary competition with his first hard-boiled novel, Scrivere o Uccidere (Writing or Killing). It was then that he considered a career as an author. As a noir novelist must do, he kept a close eye on the troublesome events that were taking place in his country: it was the period of the ‘second mafia war’, of the falling of the traditional political parties, whose intrinsic corruption was revealed by unprecedented investigations. It was an age of political vacuum and distress. It was the phase that would allow Berlusconi to seize power and govern almost untouchably for the following twenty years, offering extraordinary material to a noir author interested in joining fiction and reality.
In the 2000s he started writing about the world he knew from within, education in Italy, an issue that clearly revealed the advancement of a unique neo-con social model. That was also a risky period for the author. Living in Italy means living on the edge, twisted among the artworks of Michelangelo and Leonardo, the architecture of Florence and Rome, the unseen presence of the mafia and of corruption and crooked politicians. It means being caught between accepting the state of the country, like many people do, and the desire to shout out loud. But writing was the author’s answer to consciousness’ oblivion. As he said: “Writing is my way of coping with chaos and my cry of freedom. It is my way of seeing beyond deception. It is my homage to beauty. A writer is a whistleblower in his everyday passionate resistance to power. That’s why I write about my country. Stories have power. Power to denounce, to teach, to inspire, sometimes to heal.”
In this phase he also published another noir novel, Runaway-fuga a Venezia (Runaway to Venice, 2003), shortlisted for the final phase of the literary prize ‘Arturo Loria’ 2003. In 2013 he printed Dark City, a dystopian SF noir that describes the evils of contemporary Western society in the context of the post-9/11 crash of civilizations, joining together his interests in political reality and noir fiction. With the publication of Silvio Berlusconi’s Italy – a Portrait of the Country and its Godfather, he moved from fiction to non-fiction but, in a way, he remained faithful to the genre. This portrait of Italy and its godfather’s ‘ventennio’ (20 years) is in fact a mafia tale, a gangster story, a political thriller and a scandalous sex story.
In 2021 he went back to noir with the publication of his homage to hard-boiled fiction and film noir Scrivere o Uccidere (Writing or Killing), a revisitation of his first unpublished novel.
Growing up often means to settle down. Entering society as a professional often means to give up ideals and hopes, to lose faith and the desire to keep on fighting for democracy.
If you live in beautiful and corrupt Italy, the risk of losing your civic consciousness is even higher because following the carelessness of the majority of the people is an easy way out. When I started teaching and began my adult life I was on the brink of following that line. But that famous verse kept pounding in my brain:
"How many times must a man turn his head, pretending he just doesn’t see?"
Slowly I discovered that writing was my way of coping with chaos and my cry of freedom, my homage to beauty. Because stories have the power to denounce, to teach, to inspire, sometimes to heal. That was a kind of epiphany and so I decided that being a writer would be my way to keep on keeping on and that words would be my bullets, my answers to the Weapons of Mass Deception. From that day on my conscience was at ease and growing old more endurable. And I knew I could ‘look up and see the sky’.
...when Berlusconi was given an unexpected final guilty verdict, I decided I would write a book about the unbelievable (to foreign eyes) Silvio Berlusoni's Italy, to try and explain something foreigners cannot understand.
An exhaustive book in English about the Berlusconi Age did not exist and I felt it was a moral and civic duty of mine to write it down.
Writing it down has meant for me a way to clear my conscience, to fulfill the moral duty to give voice to the astonishing events I was witnessing, while the majority of the people accepted them as normal facts. Once the book was finished, I felt a sense of relief, as if to say: it is all written here, and there is no way to let it all slip into oblivion.

Ha frequentato il liceo classico nei primi anni Settanta, periodo di alti ideali di cambiamento che gli hanno insegnato ad aprire gli occhi e ad amare la musica folk e rock di protesta, diventando egli stesso musicista. Ha frequentato l’università a Bologna durante gli “anni di piombo” che seguirono le ribellioni degli anni Sessanta. Si è laureato in Letteratura americana con una tesi su R. Chandler e il ‘romanzo hard-boiled’, genere che ha sempre amato perché denuncia il male della società in forma narrativa dal ritmo serrato. In quest’epoca ha studiato anche letteratura al Centro Studi Americani di Roma e inglese a Londra, dove ebbe modo di conoscere il welfare state britannico degli anni laburisti. Ha anche viaggiato molto negli Stati Uniti, curioso di vedere lo stato della nazione “on the road”, ispirato agli autori ribelli americani degli anni ’50 e ’60.
Negli anni ottanta ha iniziato a insegnare inglese nelle scuole pubbliche e a tenere seminari, conferenze e corsi di letteratura, musica e cinema britannici e americani.
Nel 1989 è stato tra i dieci finalisti di un concorso letterario nazionale con il suo primo romanzo hard-boiled, Scrivere o Uccidere: è stato allora che ha avuto inizio la sua carriera di autore. Ha sempre seguito da vicino le travagliate vicende che avvenivano nel suo Paese: era il periodo della ‘seconda guerra di mafia’, della caduta dei partiti politici tradizionali, la cui intrinseca corruzione era rivelata da indagini senza precedenti. Era un’epoca di vuoto politico e angoscia. Era la fase che avrebbe permesso a Berlusconi di prendere il potere e governare quasi intoccabilmente per i successivi vent’anni, offrendo materiale straordinario a un autore noir interessato a unire finzione e realtà.
Negli anni 2000 ha iniziato a scrivere del mondo che conosceva dall’interno, l’istruzione in Italia, un settore che ha rivelato chiaramente l’avanzamento di un unico modello sociale ‘neo-con’. Ha scritto articoli e saggi sull’istruzione e poi una serie di romanzi e racconti satirici sul sistema scolastico italiano: Il professor Bingo (2000), Il professor Bingo e il nuovo che avanza (2001) , Questa scuola non è una azienda! – I racconti del professor Bingo ( 2006), Il professor Bingo e le Idi di Marzo (2008), Le Pillole del prof. Bingo 2000-2010, La fabbrica dei cretini (2018). E’ in queste opere che ha rivelato l’altro tratto tipico della sua narrativa: la satira.
Questo è stato anche un periodo rischioso per l’autore. Vivere in Italia significa vivere in bilico tra le opere di Michelangelo e Leonardo, le architetture di Firenze e Roma e la presenza invisibile della mafia e della corruzione dilagante. Significa essere combattuti tra l’accettazione dello stato del Paese, come in tanti fanno, e la voglia di gridare forte. Ma la scrittura è stata la risposta dell’autore all’oblio della coscienza: “Scrivere è il mio modo di affrontare il caos e il mio grido di libertà. È il mio modo di vedere oltre l’inganno. È il mio omaggio alla bellezza. Uno scrittore è un ‘spia’ nella sua quotidiana appassionata resistenza al potere. Ecco perché scrivo del mio paese. Le storie hanno potere. Potere di denunciare, insegnare, ispirare, a volte guarire”.
In questa fase ha pubblicato anche un altro romanzo noir, Runaway-fuga a Venezia (2003), finalista del premio letterario ‘Arturo Loria’ 2003. Nel 2013 ha stampato Dark City, un distopico noir di fantascienza incentrato sullo scontro di civiltà del post 11 settembre, romanzo he unisce l’interesse dell’autore per la realtà politica e la narrativa noir. Con la pubblicazione di Silvio Berlusconi’s Italy – a Portrait of the Country and its Godfather, è passato dalla narrativa alla saggistica ma, in un certo senso, è rimasto fedele al genere. Questo ritratto dell’Italia e del ventennio del suo padrino è infatti un racconto di mafia, una storia di gangster, un thriller politico e una scandalosa storia di sesso.
Nel 2021 è tornato al noir con la pubblicazione del suo omaggio alla narrativa hard-boiled e al film noir Scrivere o Uccidere, una rivisitazione del suo primo romanzo inedito.
